October National Cybersecurity Awareness Month text with lock and key image

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Since 2004, this annual initiative raises awareness about online safety and security.

2026 Theme: Don't Make it Easy for Them

This year’s theme is about building consistent, everyday habits that make it hard for cybercriminals to access your personal data.

Stay Safe Online

Small actions can make a big difference. The Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) recommends four easy steps to stay secure online:

  1. Update your software.
    • Install updates as soon as they are available.
    • Updates fix security flaws and help block the latest threats.
  2. Use strong passwords.
    • Make passwords long (16+ characters) and different for each account.
    • A password manager can help you create and store passwords safely.
  3. Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA).
    • Add a quick verification step, such as a code, security key, or authenticator app, to protect your accounts.
  4. Spot phishing fast.
    • Be cautious of unexpected messages with odd links, urgent language, misspellings, or unfamiliar senders.
    • If something feels off, delete or report it.

Adopting safe and secure online habits will help protect your personal information. Stay alert, and don’t make it easy for cybercriminals!
